What is a Sting team?

Sting teams are part of the Chelsea Soccer Club's program for developing highly competitive teams.

CSC has one of Alabama's most respected competitive programs. With Alabama's only National Championship team, the '98 Boys Sting 3 v 3 team won the 2007 Championship in Orlando, Florida!  CSC has had several Regional Championship 3 v 3 teams from 2003 to present as well and is the southeast's largest 3 v 3 club training over 40 teams each summer for competition in the National Tour.  The '90 Boys Sting team won a State Championship in 2004, the '96 Boys Sting team won the State Championships in 2007 , and the '95 Boys Sting team were State Semi-Finalist in 2005! Not bad from a club that registers less than 340 total players per season.

CSC's Director of Coaching, David Sharp, attributes the clubs success to technical development beginning in the club's intramural program and tactical instruction built into every training session.  CSC also runs one of the most disciplined competitive programs in the state, where every player must wear practice uniforms, train with club balls, wear black cleats, run on and off the field during training and in games, must look at coaches when spoken to and shake hands with every coach at the end of practice.  "When players are exposed to an organized and disciplined training session, it takes all the pressure off the players and enables them to concentrate on the drills and have fun!" says Coach Sharp.

How are Sting teams put together?

  1.
    1. They are selected by their coaches during tryout sessions (for U11 and up state league teams – AYSA Division I and Division II)
    2. The team has been identified as a recreational-level team (AYSA or US Club Soccer Division III, a.k.a. Premier or Rec A) that may have the potential to be playing competitively with the next year. These teams would play at the highest recreational-level available to them within the league the club is participating in.
    3. The team has been put together for a tournament, either full squad or small sided such as 3v3. In this case, the team will be considered a recreational team if the players that make up the team are selected from recreational teams.
